Junior Research Internship at PGC Mindanao
The Philippine Genome Center Mindanao aims to promote genomics research and capacitate the scientific community of Mindanao.
In lieu of this, a junior research internship program (JRIP) was conducted in cooperation with existing research projects in UP Mindanao to reach out to senior high school and undergraduate students who are interested to work in an interdisciplinary research with emphasis in molecular biology and bioinformatics. Junior interns are given the opportunity to work under the supervision of research staff from PGC Mindanao and the cooperating research project to hone both their laboratory and analytical skills in research.
The three week internship program was attended by nine (9) incoming grade 11 students of Philippine Science High School-Caraga campus. Four (4) incoming grade 11 students of Philippine Science High School-Southern Mindanao campus also had a laboratory exposure stint for 1 week. All interns were hosted by the DNA barcoding project of marine fishes by Dr. Cleto L. Nañola Jr.
The internship was conducted at the College of Science and Mathematics, University of the Philippines, Mindanao. Laboratory activities were performed in the molecular biology laboratory and zoology laboratory of the department of biological sciences and environmental studies. Lectures were held at room 116 and zoology laboratory. Interns also had a 1 day field exposure trip at Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental. The internship duration was from June 17, 2019 to July 05, 2019.
