OMICS in Mindanao: Challenges and Opportunities During the Pandemic
In celebration of PGC Mindanao’s third anniversary, it recently concluded the Mindanao-Wide Omics Webinar 2022 last October 27-28, 2022. The 2-day webinar showcased presentations from omics experts, providing a glimpse of the potential applications and future challenges of omics technologies in mitigating the adverse consequences of pandemics.
The opening ceremony of the webinar was attended by UP Mindanao Chancellor and former PGC Mindanao director and now a technical expert under the Research and Development Division of PGC Mindanao, Dr. Lyre Anni E. Murao who gave opening remarks. Present also was the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the UP System, Dr. Maria Cynthia Rose B. Bautista, and the Executive Director of the Philippine Genome Center (PGC), Dr. Cynthia P. Saloma who gave their special message during the program.
A total of 976 viewers via Facebook and 460 zoom participants have attended the webinar which comprised members of the academe, organizations, industries, and government agencies.
The field of omics provides a powerful avenue toward the understanding of biological concepts through a multidisciplinary perspective. The ability to elucidate cellular processes that could accelerate the discovery of solutions to health, agricultural and food research problems is made possible via the continuing development of high-throughput technologies.
The global COVID-19 pandemic provides opportunities for cutting-edge research that could employ omics technologies. It can facilitate research initiatives at an advanced pace through its high throughput strategy. With the rise of research opportunities during the onslaught of this global predicament, escalated challenges in the conduct of research and other facets of knowledge building.
