PGC Mindanao’s newly appointed Program Director

The University of the Philippines (UP) Board of Regents (BOR) has approved the appointment of Dr. Joel Hassan G. Tolentino as the new Program Director of the Philippine Genome Center Mindanao, effective April 2022.

Dr. Tolentino was associated with PGC Mindanao as a project staff under the Research and Development Division. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Food Science and Chemistry (DFSC) at UP Mindanao.  He obtained his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of Connecticut, USA, and his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering (cum laude) from UP Los Baños. His PhD dissertation was on mutagenesis studies of DNA lesions by site-specific approach. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Florida, USA where he had worked mainly on mechanisms of drug resistance in certain blood cancers. His current research is on drug discovery of potential anti-lung cancer substances from plants found in the Davao region.

As Director, Dr. Tolentino will provide leadership to PGC Mindanao’s initiatives to further research, training, and knowledge exchange activity across  Mindanao. Dr. Tolentino’s research background and professional network will also be of help in continuing the ongoing developments in PGC Mindanao.

Director Tolentino replaced Dr. Lyre Anni E. Murao, who was also the newly appointed 6th chancellor of the University of the Philippines Mindanao.
