Science Internship Program (SIP) -Introduction to Bioinformatics

The Bioinformatics Division of the Philippine Genome Center Mindanao conducted training on Introduction to Bioinformatics as part of the Science Internship Program (SIP) of the Philippine Science High School – Southern Mindanao Campus from November 16 to December 7, 2021.

The program covered topics on genome sequence processing, assembly, and annotation.

The training participants were introduced to the concepts and practicalities of bioinformatics specifically the ARTIC bioinformatics workflow, which will be used on a test COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 genome dataset, and subsequent annotation/identification of virus variants from this test dataset.

The month-long activity became an avenue for the participants to appreciate basic bioinformatics concepts and practicalities, particularly learning about the basics of COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 variant identification.

This activity was conducted via a number of synchronous Zoom meetings and asynchronous learning tasks delivered through the Edmodo virtual learning platform and Google Drive (for the learning materials and data sets used throughout the activity).

Bioinformatics staff: Giovanna Fea Oguis, Ritchie Mae Gamot, and Paul Lorenzo Gaite.
